About

I am Carolyn Allison, founder and lead facilitator of High Altitude Learning.

My professional goal is to provide coaching and consulting services to world schools throughout their program implementation process. I customize services to assist teachers and coordinators along the journey from knowing about program specifications to successfully integrating principles of international frameworks for teaching and learning into daily practice.

Thirty-one years of service inside local public schools taught me the challenge and value of achieving “persistent growth by design.” Teachers working within healthy, collaborative school communities work heroically to design and deliver courses of study that connect students with bright futures. Issues of time, competing priorities and confusion over practices can hinder their progress. My services merge theory with practice by honoring these unique needs of teachers:
* clear guidance regarding why and how of program details,
* time-saving, practical support and useful resources,
* ongoing and respectful mentoring throughout the learning process.

A bit about my professional qualifications:

I have degrees from Pennsylvania State University (Bachelor of Arts and Sciences) and The Colorado College (Master of Arts in Teaching, Secondary Sciences).
Select studies that shaped my expertise as an educator include:

  • Leader Development Program participant at the Center for Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs, CO
  • IB Leadership Academy, New Orleans, LA, 2004
  • Extensive action research from schoolwide implementation of the personal project
  • The Riviera Maya Educational Trust full immersion program into rainforest biology on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
  • Teachers as Scholars participant, The Colorado College
  • Co-creator of WonderQuest, Inc. science curriculum designed to foster parnterships between families and schools

My classroom experiences include 30+ years as a teacher leader, grades 6-12. My intrigue with IB principles and practices began in 1998, and since then I have dedicated more than 20 years to IB science teaching, IBMYP coordination and IBEN workshop leading with schools around the world. The IB leadership opportunities (described below) added immeasurably to the challenge, joy, and satisfaction of my career.

  • International Baccalaureate Educator Network, 2001 to present
    Workshop Leader, Curriculum Developer, Consultant
North and South America, China, Australia, Indonesia, Belgium, Mexico, Peru
  • International Baccalaureate Workshop Leader, Asia-Pacific Region, 2002
Official IB trainings, school-specific support for program implementation
  • MYP Representative, IB Association of Rocky Mountain Schools, 2018-2021
Trainings, practical support, and advocacy on behalf of MYP schools

I have passion for infusing joy, curiosity, and precision in what happens inside classrooms and school communities. I believe excellence in teaching includes deep thinking and intentional planning about what we teach and how we teach it. Excellence is rarely accomplished in isolation or without the ongoing mentoring and support from a skilled facilitator. I look forward to partnering with you at your program frontiers.
